Let's count the ways in which I love to overthink things!
...maybe let's do that another time, and talk about this guy instead.
Aulë, a smith and maker of all sorts of things, from mountains to precious gems hidden in them. I figured giving him four arms would allow him to do heavy duty tasks in a smithy as well as messing with finer arts of jewelcrafting and such. As soon as I gave him four arms, I decided to figure out how they work... aaaand that's what I spent my Sunday morning doing. Looking up shoulder girdles, clavicles, gorillas, bears, birds and pectoralis attachment points.
Initially I figured he'd be fine with just one set of clavicles. Until I remembered about anterior deltoids. I tried connecting them to the first rib, but that just looked silly. The size of the arms also necessitated some serious pectoralis major, and in the end I gave up and gave him a second set. I may drop the inner scapula for the smaller arms, but I'll burn that bridge when I get there.
Heh. I was so focused on playing with the shoulder girdle, don't even know what I want to do for his face. At this point, I kind of don't really care - it'll come to me later. Just have to decide if I want to do beard or no beard.
Oh yes, and I also decided to drop the scissoring sternum, that was just weird.

There's nothing wrong with over thinking things - it means you can justify your decisions better. As a science student with an interest in anatomy, I have to agree with giving him two sets of pectorals - I can't see him having nearly the same range of motion in both arms otherwise. I also support having the more powerful set of arms on top - not only does it look better, but I would not be surprised if that gave them more power. I can't wait to see what design you settle on though. ^^
